According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple Computer and Motorola are expanding their computer markets in China by developing computer systems that command Chinese commands both orally and handwritten. Apple recently disclosed that its speech recognition system requires users to speak through a 33-page document on their computer’s microphone to familiarize the computer with the pronunciations of 1200 syllables for Mandarin Chinese. The system can produce about 350,000 phrases based on voice-directed instructions, but only 60 words in a minute, about 40% of the normal speech rate. In addition, this $ 300 input system consumes a significant amount of computer memory and can only accept instructions from the user who originally read it. apple
