钱钟书在《围城》的序里说,这本书是他“锱铢积累”写成的。我是“锱铢积累”读完的。每天晚上,他把写成的稿子给我看,急切地瞧我怎样反应。我笑,他也笑;我大笑,他也大笑。有时我放下稿子,和他相对大笑,因为笑的不仅是书上的事,还有书外的事。我不用说明笑什么,反正彼此心照不宣。然后他就告诉我下一段打算写什么,我就急切地等着看他怎么写。他平均每天写五百字左右。他给我看的是定稿,不再改动。后来他对这部小说以及其它“少作”都不满意,恨不得
