Recently, Obregon et al. (University of London, UK) reported that genetic engineering of tobacco resulted in the production of a fusion protein of HIV-1 p24 protein and human IgA Fc sequence. The fusion protein successfully induced mouse antibody and T cell responses to HIV. Studies have shown that the binding of immunoglobulin sequences to viral antigens can enhance immunogenicity either directly or by directing the antigen to the target cell population.
