校训是一所学校的文化与精神象征,中国大学的校训浓缩了中国传统文化深邃的内涵,体现了中华民族对理想人格的最高追求。随着中国和世界的联系日益紧密,对大学校训准确传神地翻译,有助于我们与其他国家进行文化交流,有助于我们向世界传播中国文化的价值观。西安市拥有80多所高校,可谓高校云集,然而校训的翻译却不尽如人意。笔者通过研究西安市八所知名院校的翻译,分析各自的词汇和语篇结构,发现这八所院校普遍均存在逐字翻译的问题。通过对比西方与香港诸所大学校训的翻译,笔者认为在从事校训翻译时,译者应更加注重语篇结构的多样性和诗学美感的传递。
School motto is the symbol of culture and spirit of a school. The motto of Chinese university concentrates the profound connotation of Chinese traditional culture and embodies the Chinese nation’s highest pursuit of ideal personality. As the relations between China and the world become closer and closer, the accurate and vivid translation of the university motto will help us to exchange cultural exchanges with other countries and help us spread the values of Chinese culture to the world. Xi’an has more than 80 colleges and universities, it can be said that colleges and universities gathered, but the motto of the translation is not satisfactory. By studying the translation of eight famous universities in Xi’an and analyzing their own vocabulary and discourse structure, the author finds that there are generally verbatim translators in these eight colleges. By contrasting the translations of the mottoes of the universities in Hong Kong and Western countries, the author thinks that translators should pay more attention to the diversity of discourse structure and the transfer of poetic beauty when engaging in school motto translation.
