Researchers have had the most convincing evidence that pregnant women can dramatically reduce the risk of serious birth defects by eating lots of fruits and vegetables or taking multivitamins daily. The key is to get enough folate. The new study found that ingesting sufficient amounts of this vitamin in early pregnancy actually eradicated the birth of children with schizocarpus. The US Department of Public Health recommends that all women who are able to conceive should have a daily intake of 0.4 mg of folic acid, which can be obtained by taking a common multivitamin.
