庚子之乱,八国联军大举进犯。大学士徐桐之子徐承煜听说两宫已经西逃,建议全家杀身殉国。徐桐无奈,于是和全家人商议如何去死。商议过后,决定投井。于是敦促家人立即准备。当徐桐的老母、妻儿辈纷纷投井后,徐缩作一团,难以为之。后由徐承煜扶着跳下井中,但是井中人太多,徐桐跳下后,踩在人头上,无法落水。徐承煜只得把他拉上来。徐桐上来后,命仆人在房梁上结绳套,准备和儿子一同悬梁殉国。谁知徐桐前脚归西,徐承煜即起身离去。
