世界上任何门类的艺术都有其特定的表现方法和造型程式。显而易见,运用以线条为主要表现手段的笔墨法造型是中国画的突出特点。线条虽不是中国画的专利,但它在中国画中却有着独特的地位,它的意义非同凡响。中国的文字和绘画以线条构成不是偶然的,是与中国艺术家对线条的情有独钟和独特感受分不开的。中国画家认为以点作画易于零散、琐碎,以面作画则易于模糊和平板,而用线最能灵活迅速地捕捉住世间一切物的形象。线可以充分发挥毛笔、水墨及宣纸的特性,具有非常丰富的笔墨变化趣味,形成高度艺术性的美感。线可以说是中国画的灵魂,线条从造型、传神、达意到抒情,是画家心弦的拨动。艺术家通过线条来传达千变万化、丰富美妙的乐音和心声。
