An instrument that uses space technology to detect human cancers has come out. The instrument, called the Microwave Appliance, was developed at the Langley Research Center at the U.S.A. and is currently being tested at the East Virginia School of Medicine at Norfolk General Hospital. The device has detected cancer in 14 cancer patients and found cancer in a patient whose cancer has not been found by conventional techniques. The microwave applicator has a sensitive radiometer capable of measuring changes in temperature of less than 0.1 ° C, which can detect cancer quickly as it is hotter than the surrounding normal tissue. Microwave applicators also outperform infrared temperature recorders because infrared temperature recorders are limited to probing close to the surface of the skin
