Just a few years ago, scholars at the Humboldt University in Berlin still held the opinion that the discipline of Mongolia was “a child of a democratic Germany.” Although research on Mongolian language and Mongolian history started before 1945, it was almost a by-product of Chinese studies. However, the files of Humboldt University in Berlin show exactly what is going on. As early as the beginning of this century, the Mongolian Studies at Humboldt University in Berlin began. All this dates back to the commendable work of Wilhelm Gruber (died July 2, 1908). During his tenure as a senior lecturer at the Oriental Studies Institute, he taught Mongolian as well as teaching Chinese and Manchu language. It may be that Gruber introduced Mongolian into the classroom of this college.
