Ar-Ar年代学方法是当前地质研究中最为重要的年代学方法之一。随着理论方法的不断完善,实验技术的不断提高,获得了诸多鲜明的进展,在已有研究成果的基础上对Ar-Ar年代学方法从基本原理,进展与不足及其在石油地质中的应用等方面进行综合分析讨论,认为该方法理论得到了进一步完善,精度不断提高,技术从常规阶段升温法发展到了激光显微探针法,应用领域与可测试矿物也逐渐扩大,其中石油地质中主要通过流体包裹体与自生钾长石以及自生伊利石Ar-Ar定年两种途径来确定油气藏年代学,但该方法中诸如年龄代表的意义等问题尚需进一步明确和完善。
