The transient operation of a bifurcated shell-and-tube heat exchanger with a baffle can be described by a multi-unit dynamic model in which each unit represents a particular part of the heat exchanger, with the help of a computer, The method enables the dynamic simulation of almost all types of shell and tube heat exchangers. The model incorporates a time-dependent hot and cold flow inlet condition so that many start-up conditions can be simulated and a disturbance can be introduced into the inlet temperature or flow once the system reaches steady-state operating conditions. This feature makes the model very useful not only for design but also for transient analysis and system control.
