后冈一期文化的陶器中发现有以泥质红陶为主,形体较大,口部多施以数周弦纹,颈下为一周鹰嘴状纽或长方形乳钉纽的所谓陶罐、陶缸或陶尖底器。根据以往对这类陶器的研究成果,应定名为陶鼓。陶鼓作为一种打击乐器,其历史非常悠久,在黄河下游的北辛文化、大汶口文化和黄河中游的陶寺文化发现陶鼓的数量最多,自仰韶时代至龙山时代均有发现。
