一件新型乐器的诞生,成就了一个曲种。坠琴就是这样。由于它的出现,中华大地上开出了一朵娇艳的民间说唱艺术之花——河南坠子。关于河南坠子的形成年代,论家诸多,各说不一。但有一个观点为多数人认同,即从开封乔治山首唱《玉虎坠》段子至今,已有二百多年。河南坠子及坠琴名称的来历,都因这一唱段而得。据开封民间老艺人王元伦讲,清嘉庆年间,开封艺人乔治山,偶尔将一个马尾弓子放在木板三弦上拉奏,听到了一种独特的音响,经过反复试制,发明了第一把坠琴。随之,民间便有了唱河南坠子这个行当。起初,河南坠子的从艺者为男性,一个人自拉自唱,即所谓“一把弦子唱天下”(民间又称坠琴为弦子)。
