This review of transaction cost economics is based on the “three elements of Carnegie” - to be trained, with interdisciplinary knowledge and an active mindset. The first element requires that scholars who want to open the black boxes of economic organizations are trained in a modest, gradual, constructive, and deterministic manner with the goal of acquiring and testing definitive meanings. The second element suggests that researchers in economic organizations be prepared to cross multiple disciplinary boundaries whenever they need to work closely with the various phenomena. The element of “having an active mindset” is required by keeping curiosity and asking “what is happening here”. The end of the article discusses its operability issues.
