苔丝是英国杰出的现实主义作家托马斯·哈代批判旧道德的人物典型。苔丝标志着新农业工人新形象的诞生,尽管她在思想上具有软弱性,但在灾难面前表现出来的刚毅和自我牺牲的献身精神,使她成为一个富有悲剧力量的人物。在哈代看来,苔丝的一切天赋都是她最伟大的美质,她是一个纯洁的人。但她饱经社会种种有形无形邪恶势力的迫害摧残之后,最终成为可怜可悲的牺牲品。
Tess is a typical example of the criticism of old morals by Thomas Hardy, an eminent realist writer in the United Kingdom. Tess marked the birth of a new image of a new agricultural worker. Despite her weakness in thought, Tess’s resolute and self-sacrificing dedication in the face of disaster made her a tragic figure. In Hardy’s opinion, Tess of all the gifts are her greatest beauty, she is a pure person. However, she eventually became a poor and sad victim after she was tortured by the persecution of various visible and invisible evil forces in the community.
