According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the number of U.S. prisoners has increased by 500% in the last 30 years. In 2006, the prison held more than 2.26 million prisoners, an increase of 2.8% over the end of 2005, the highest in the past six years. The U.S. population accounts for only 5% of the world’s population, while prisoners make up 25% of the world’s prisoners. There are an average of 751 prisoners out of every 100,000 U.S. citizens. It is not yet estimated that 96% of prisoners are sentenced to more than one year in prison, which means that one out of every 200 U.S. citizens is serving a prison sentence of more than one year. The rate of recidivism in the United States is still on the rise. According to statistics, about two-thirds of prisoners will be revoked again within three years after they are released.
