The concentrations of toxic heavy metals in human aqueous humor and tissue were measured. Thirty eyes of 16 autopsy subjects were dissected to obtain aqueous humor, vitreous body, lens, ciliary body, retina, retinal pigment epithelium and choroidal tissue. Concentrations of lead, cadmium, mercury and thallium in ocular tissues, aqueous humor and blood were measured using an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer and their expression was measured in ng / g. Heavy metal concentrations in ocular tissues were compared using the paired t-test. The measurements showed that lead and cadmium were found in all examined ocular tissue pigment layers, with the largest concentration in the retinal / choroidal epithelium. Cadmium was found in the retina of all examined eyes, and lead was found in 9 eyes. Trace amounts of lead and cadmium are detectable in the vitreous, lens, and blood, and lead and septum are not detected in aqueous humor. No mercury and thallium were detected in ocular tissues, aqueous humor and blood. Studies suggest that the accumulation of lead and cadmium in human eye tissue, especially the retinal pigment epithelial cells and the choroid, their possible toxicity to the eye and its role in ocular disease needs further study.
