中国运河初创自春秋时期,有确切文字记载是公元前486年吴王夫差开凿邗沟,沟通长江和淮河,至今已有2500多年。秦统一六国,开始全国的通航水运大连通,这是中国大运河第一次修建高潮。秦汉运河的目的地是长安,运河把经济繁荣的江南地区(南端是杭州)与首都连接起来。隋代再次统一全国,开凿了南北大运河,这是中国大运河第二次修建高潮。这条大运河各段实际都用了几百年才建成。
