A Colombian mushroom farmer, who replaces straw with alder wood instead of straw, cultivates Agaricus bisporus. After receiving the mushroom, the waste wood chips are pasteurized and then sold for gardening purposes. Near the site of Mogun is a heat engine and bleached kraft pulp mill, where there is a lot of fiberglass scrap. Researchers at the British Columbia Institute have recently demonstrated that pulp mill waste is a suitable substrate for the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus with a yield increase of 20% (Mueller and Gawley, 1983).
