The controversy over the long-standing stagnation of ancient Chinese society has existed for a long time. Most scholars look for reasons at the level of the political system. Some scholars also make micro-exploration on the socio-economic level. It is true that political factors may play a more direct role in social development. However, when we carefully examine the characteristics of socio-economic and natural dimensions, we find that the mystery of history is also hidden in the meantime. This article attempts to illustrate the demographic factors that have an important impact on the development of ancient Chinese society. 1. Excessive population leads to excessive reclamation, forest destruction and environmental degradation. The deterioration of environmental conditions in our country is accompanied by a gradual increase in population.
