多年来,人们一直在寻找合理的英语教学模式,那么,英语教学的实质究竟是什么呢?当代教学论一致认为教学“是教师的教与学生的学所组成的教育活动”。就英语而言,“教学的实质是交际”。为什么说英语教学的实质是交际呢?第一,教学是师生之间的交际,是彼此之间进行思想、感情、信息交流的过程,教学的效果是双方互动的结果,也可以说:教学即交际。第二,教学是活动,通过交际活动,学生在物质操作和思维操作上认识、掌握英语,形成运用英语的能力,也可以说:教学用交际。第三,师生双方的认识活动是相互依存、相互作用的。学生认识英语的进展离不开教师对客观规律的认识,教师对客观规律的认识也离不开学生在教师指导下学习的客观效应。
