在1936年的奥运会上,人们称之为“田赛马拉松”的撑竿跳高比赛,从下午1点开始进行角逐,一直到晚上9点才初见分晓。美国运动员梅多斯以4.35米的成绩获得冠军。但是亚军人选却无法确认,因日本的西田修平、大江季雄和美国的塞福顿3人成绩相同,都是4.25米。按照规则,他们必须重赛才能分出名次。经过又一轮较量,两位日本选手都跳过了4.15米,美国塞福顿则失败了。可还是无法确定第2、3名的名次。按理说两位日本选手还应该再赛一次。
