传统的四合院建筑是我国建筑文化中的瑰宝，迄今已有三千多年的历史，西周时，形式就已初具规模。北京的四合院，更是天下闻名。旧时的北京，除了紫禁城、皇家苑囿，寺观庙坛及王府衙署外，大量的建筑，便是那数不清的百姓住宅。因这种民居有正房(北房)、倒座(南座)、东厢房和西厢房四座房屋在四面围合，形成一个口字形，里面是一个中心庭院，所以这种院落式民居被称为四合院。
