春秋战国时期铸行的有文铜贝中,以“■”贝为最多。对“■”字的释训虽有多种。但学者大多倾向于释之为“贝”。彭信威先生在其大著《中国货币史》中说:“哭是古文贝(■)字的变形。源于吴大徽之《权衡度量实验考》,古‘贝’字作■,为象形,此作■,为■变体字”。朱活先生认为,“■”字是“贝化”二字合文,上部为“贝”之减笔,下部为“化”之减笔,正因为是合文,成为楚贝的专用字,并说■释“一贝”较佳。近年来,有关文章直称“■”贝,多不作释。笔者不揣浅陋,试释“■”字,敬请方家教正。
