Two geologists from the geological exploration department in Kansas, United States, proposed using rifles as a survey tool for groundwater sources. Shooting underground with a rifle, producing vibration, and then measuring and analyzing the shock waves reflected from the ground, can obtain information on the underground structure, thereby determining the location of the groundwater source. This “seismic reflection method” is generally used to explore oil. However, explosives and steam pump hammers that are commonly used to make “earthquake” methods can only measure formations below a depth of 30 meters. The shock waves generated by rifles are suitable for surveying.
