清末民初,受外国资本主义经济侵入的影响,河北无极县传统的耕织业带着民族资本主义经济成分缓慢地发展起来.数以千计的山西商民背井离乡,跋山涉水,历尽千辛万苦来到无极,涌入“开通风气”的时代潮流,从而对无极县民族资本主义的发展产生了一定的推动作用.时至今日,人们依然念念不忘他们的历史功绩,他们在无极县的发展状况仍在民间广泛流传着.一本世纪20至30年代,无极县的布店、印染、当铺、钱铺、盐店5大行业相继勃起,从业人员1700左右,其中有山西商民约900人,占总人数的53%.无极商业经济中何以有如此众多的三晋志士参与管理,固然有其历史渊源.明代山西洪洞的移民在无极县建有80余村,占当时全县村庄2/3以上;但主要原因在于山西人普遍擅长经商.清乾隆年间,山西人即在无极县城开当铺、钱庄,光绪年间在郭庄创建布店,经营盐店,他们深知无极这块“风水宝地”蕴藏着取之不尽用之不竭的财富有待开发,使他们父带子,弟随兄,携亲搭友,纷至沓来,乃至垄断了无极商品经济中的主要行业.
