Due to the ruminant digestion and utilization of food in the rumen fermentation process, it is extremely difficult to find a direct relationship between the action of a single ingredient in a diet and the performance of livestock. Varying the ratio of crude feed, the ratio of fiber to available carbohydrate, affects the composition of the microbial population in the rumen and therefore the amount and composition of the final product of the fermentation.
