Honesty, my mum always used to tell me, is the best policy. Of course, this didnt include her when she told me that if I didnt eat all my vegetables Father Christmas would find out and wouldnt give me any presents.
But when it comes to medicine, I had assumed it was important to always be honest with my patients. After all, the doctorpatient relationship is based on trust, and therefore honesty is essential, or so I thought.
I had just started working in geriatrics (老年病科). Mr. McMahon was brought in when his baby was found very swollen. I took a medical history from his daughter whod accompanied him in the ambulance. Shed been his main carer for years. I stood looking at him as she gave a detailed history. “Has he lost any weight recently?” I asked, “Well, its funny you should mention that, but yes.” she said slowly. There was silence for a few moments. “Why? What are you worried about?” she asked, I hesitated. She was obviously very involved in his care and it was only fair that I told her the truth. “Well, we need to prove its not cancer.” I said and talked briefly about some of the tests I was going to order.
Half an hour later, a nurse called me: “Mr. McMahons daughter broke down—she said you told her he had cancer.” My heart sank. By the time I arrived at the ward, my consultant was already there, explaining that we still had to run lots of tests and that it was by no means confirmed that he had cancer. I stood silently at the end of the bed. My consultant was obviously angry with me and as we left Mr. McMahon, she turned to me. “Why on earth did you do that?” she asked in disbelief. I looked at her. “She asked me what I was worried about and I told her.” I said, hanging my head. “And give her more to worry about?” replied my consultant. “You dont say the word ‘cancer’ until its confirmed. Even if you suspect it, think very carefully before you tell people.”
As it turned out, it wasnt cancer. But I did learn that when someone is stressed and worried about their loved one, theyre sometimes selective in what they hear—and as a doctor its important to be mindful of this. In being truthful, Id made the situation worse.

Many people often say there is more stress (压力) in todays society than in years past. In fact, these people are comparing our lives with that of the cave man, who didnt have to worry about the stock market or the atomic bomb. They forget that the cave man worried about being eaten by a bear while he was asleep, or about dying of hunger—things that few people worry much about today.
Actually stress is a normal state of affairs, and its important that people understand what they are talking about when they speak about stress. Whenever anyone experiences something unpleasant, for lack of a better word they say they are under stress. Yet there is such a thing as pleasant stress—as in the case of the Olympic winner at the moment of his glory, or a conductor as his orchestra (乐队) performs particularly well. They are just sending out excitement, and they are giving off all the stress hormones (荷尔蒙) exactly the same as if they were in low spirits or had just heard of a death in the family. We call the pleasant or healthy kind “eustress” and the unpleasant or unhealthy kind “distress”.
Then how can people deal with stress? The secret is not to avoid it but to “do your own thing”. It implies doing what you like to do and what you are made to do at your own speed. For most people, it is really a matter of learning how to live and how to behave in various situations, to decide: “Do I really want to take my fathers business or be a musician?” If you really want to be a musician, then be one.
40. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A. Modern people experiences more stress than the cave man.
B. The cave man experienced more stress than modern people.
C. People dont suffer more stress today; its just that they think they do.
D. Modern people have the same worries as the cave man did.

A. Your favorite football team has lost an important game.
B. You have failed an important examination.
C. You are informed of an accident of your best friend.
D. You have won the first prize in an English competition.
42. The purpose of writing the passage is to let us know.
A. stress does not necessarily refer to unpleasant experience
B. distress is what people call the pleasant kind of stress
C. an Olympic winner feels the same stress as one who loses a family member
D. people will feel eustress and distress at the same time
43. According to the passage, how can people deal with stress?
A. Do things that you really want to do.
B. Do whatever youre expected to do.
C. Try to do things successfully.
D. Refuse to do whatever youre told to.

Do you love holidays, but hate the increase in weight that follows? You are not alone. Holidays are time for splendid meals and celebrating, especially with the traditional cultural foods.
With proper planning, though, it is possible to keep normal weight during the holidays. The idea is to enjoy the holidays and think about moderation (节制). Whether it is celebrating at the office party or sitting down for the traditional family dinner, regard eating as a time for tasting a variety of foods. Here are some tips to carry you through the round of celebrations and your social calendar without feeling having done wrong.
Set some goals that you can reach. Unless you have special needs to go on a diet, there are no forbidden foods. Dont turn down the foods you enjoy, but be sensible.
Before you leave home, have a small, lowfat meal or snack. This can help you to avoid eating or drinking much. Use a small luncheonsize plate and avoid the large ones that may encourage you to “load up”. You should be most comfortable eating an amount of food about the size of your fist. Once you have had your “tasting” serving, move away from the dining room. Doing so will make it easy to stop yourself eating constantly at the sight of food.
Eat slowly and fill up beforehand with clear soup and raw fruit or vegetables and fruit in a yogurt (酸奶) dressing rather than cream and cheese sauces. You can also drink a large glass of water before you eat to help you feel full.
If you have a sweet tooth, try mints, hard candies, and fruits. These dont have the fat content of creamy desserts and chocolate.
Avoid highfat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy may have a generous amount of fat. Choose lean meats. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables.
Dont let exercise take a break during the holidays. A 20minute walk after a meal can help burn off extra calories.
44. The underlined sentence “You are not alone.” here means that.
A. you are firmly supported by a lot of people
B. many people are with you and youll never be alone
C. the situation mentioned above is common among many people
D. many people enjoy holidays and seldom hate putting on weight
45. What does the writer actually tell you when he says “Dont turn down the foods you enjoy, but sensible”?
A. You can enjoy your favorite foods but dont eat too much.
B. You must pour down the foods you enjoy, for it is reasonable.
C. You shouldnt refuse anything you like and eat it as much as possible.
D. You ought to accept what you enjoy and refuse what you dont.
46. Which of the following may be a great favorite of a person who has a sweet tooth?
A. Clear soup and raw fruit.
B. Salad and green vegetables.
C. Mints, hard candies and fruits.
D. Creamy desserts and chocolate.
47. The passage mainly tells you during the holidays.
A. how to follow a healthy diet
B. how to control your portions (食量)
C. how to maintain your normal weight
D. how to maintain physical activity

Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted. Careless methods of production and lack of consumer demand for environment friendly products have contributed to the pollution problem. One result is that millions of tons of glass, paper, plastic, and metal containers are produced, and these are difficult to get rid of.
However, today, more and more consumers are choosing “green products” and demanding that the products they buy should be safe for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these: “Will this shampoo damage the environment? Can this metal container be reused or can it only be used once?”
A recent study showed that two out of five adults now consider the environmental safety of a product before they buy it. This means that companies must now change the way they make and sell their products to make sure that they are “green”, that is, friendly to the environment.
Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carry labels (标签) to show that the product is green. Some companies have made the manufacturing (生产) of clean and safe products their main selling point and emphasize it in their advertising.
The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business. No longer will the public accept the old attitude of “Buy it, use it, throw it away, and forget it.” The public pressure is on, and gradually business is cleaning up its act.
48. It becomes clear from the text that the driving force behind green products is .
A. public caring for the environment
B. companies desire for bigger sales
C. new ways of doing business
D. rapid growth of supermarkets
49. What would be the best tide for the text?
A. Business and People
B. Business Goes Green
C. Shopping Habits Are Changing
D. Supermarkets and Green Products
50. The underlined word “it” in the fourth paragraph refers to.
A. a selling point
B. the company name
C. a great demand for health foods
D. the manufacturing of green products

In a society such as the United states or Canada, which has many national, religious, and cultural differences, people highly value individualism—the differences among people. Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values. Students do not memorize information. Instead, they work individually and find answers themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions.
In most Asian societies, by contrast, the people have the same language, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the orient reflects societys belief in group goals and purposed rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan, and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very formal. The teacher lectures, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students recite rules or information that they have memorized.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these systems of education. For example, one advantage to the system in Japan is that students there learn much more math and science than American students learn by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and selfcontrol. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized.
The advantage of the educational system in North American, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they havent memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.

There is a heated discussion over the issue about whether China should bid for the 2018 World Cups in our class. The opinion concerning this hot topic varies from person to person.
Some students think that China should bid for the 2018 World Cups. In their opinion, China has already hosted the 2008 Olympic Games successfully and has enough experience to host the World Cups. Further, hosting the World Cups can greatly promote Chinas economy. They believe that hosting the World Cups will stimulate peoples passion for football and improve the level of Chinese football.
However, others dont thinks so. From their point of view, China is still a developing country and hosting the World Cups will cost a lot of money. Whats worse, the Chinese National Football Team performs badly. In addition, a large number of football fans will flood into China, which will cause great pressure on traffic, accommodation, security and so on.
As far as I am concerned, China should host the 2018 World Cups. Its really a good chance for the development of our national football. And I like watching football matches very much.

Then how can people deal with stress? The secret is not to avoid it but to “do your own thing”. It implies doing what you like to do and what you are made to do at your own speed.
