A 71-page report from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) concludes: “Charged particle beam weapons do not seem to be closer to the kind of weapon that Buck Rogers originally envisioned.” The report was compiled by a science and technology group (Department of Physics at MIT) studying international security and supported by the Ford Foundation. The report was released at a time when several authorities have speculated that the Soviet Union has made a breakthrough in its work on the use of charged particles as a weapon. In a series of articles, the publishing industry in the United States has convinced everyone that the Soviet Union has taken a big step toward charged particle beam technology. The Soviet Union also reported on the progress made by the Soviet Union in using charged particle beam weapons to deal with the U.S. intercontinental missile. In addition, Major General George J. Kigen, the former director of the Air Forces of the United States, has even confirmed that the Soviet Union is far ahead of the technology and is able to deploy the particle beam weapon in 1981.
