[Objective] To investigate the mental health status and characteristics of HIV infected persons and AIDS patients. [Methods] Twenty-two HIV-infected and AIDS-infected patients in hospital and hospitalized, and 102 healthy subjects were assessed by SCL-90 and analyzed by scale factor. [Results] The scores of all HIV-infected and AIDS patients were mostly higher than that of healthy people in China, especially AIDS patients with somatization, anxiety, depression and hostility factors. The score of each factor increased with the severity of the disease, and there was a statistically significant difference in one factor of psychosis (F = 5.399, P <0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that age, type of disease and education level were the important influential factors of SCL-90 factor score. [Conclusion] The psychological problems of HIV infected persons and AIDS patients tend to aggravate gradually with the severity of their illness, and have some influence on their mental health and age.
