The Lugu Lake is located on the borders of Sichuan and Yunnan. There live an ethnic group named the Moso with a population of about 40,000. They are well known for maintaining a system of matriarchy which has been passed down from their remote ancestors. The men and women there will never get married, and the head of a family is a woman. A woman does not have a husband but may have several sexual paI-tners. The children never know who are their fathers. This peculiar community, which has existed for over thousands of years, may be the last matriarchal society in the world.
