Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in aquatic environments are closely related to organic matter. In different water depths and different seafloor types, the sediments have different organic matters. Different seafloor types can be either aerobic / bioturbation conditions, or anoxic / laminar conditions, depending on the depth of the water. In order to investigate whether these different environments affected the distribution of PCBs in the sediments, sediments of different seafloor types and different depths were selected in two areas of the Baltic Sea Stockholm archipelago. Seabed divided into different types based on water content. The results show that the PCB concentrations based on organic carbon in both regions are the same for different seafloor types. The possible differences in the properties of organic matter in different sediments may have no important effect, as does the effects of bioturbation and redox conditions. Instead, it is the nature of PCB congeners that determines the distribution of PCBs in sediments.
