Thoracotomy is a dangerous operation that can make patients more painful and have to prolong the length of stay in the hospital. The University of Tokyo Department of Medicine has developed an endoscopic device that can perform cardiac surgery without the need for a thoracotomy. In performing cardiac surgery with this surgical device, a light catheter (1.2 m long, 3 mm in wall thickness) is inserted through the blood vessel into the heart. Catheter fiber endoscope and a remote control of stainless steel scissors. Guided by a monitor connected directly to the fiberoptic endoscope, scissors may be used to cut off obstructed portions of the heart
