肃南地处祁连山区和河西走廊的中部,是青藏高原和蒙新沙漠的衔接、过渡地带。除具备大陆性气候、高原气候、沙漠气候的特点外,主要是山地垂直气候的影响较大。在这种地理气候条件下,形成了丰富多样的植被类型。它几乎包括了我国北方各种草场。蝗虫是以食草为主的昆虫,其种群组成和草场类型一样,也是在一定气候条件下形成的,两者之间分布有其一致性。也就是说在什么样植被类型条件下,就会形成什么样的蝗虫群落。
