For samples containing less than 50 ppm sulfur, the combustion-iodometry and the combustion-borate methods have certain limitations that affect the accuracy of the method due to the insignificant color change of the indicator at the end of the titration. In order to improve the sensitivity of the combustion method, it has been proposed that the released SO 2 should be absorbed in the sodium tetrachloromer mercuric chloride solution and that magenta and formaldehyde are added to produce the purple magenta sulfonic acid derivative, which is then measured spectrophotometrically. But the method is cumbersome, time-consuming, not suitable for routine analysis.
