翡、翠之名尚矣,初谓二鸟及其彩羽,故其造字皆从羽形。《尔雅》曰:‘翠,鹬也。’《说文》曰:‘翡,赤雀;翠,青雀也。’后世因以指代赤、青二色。迨两字叠韵,合为一词,乃又偏以‘翠’义为重矣。今更一转而称缅玉,吾恐其本义他日将愈湮昧也。君子曰:循名考实,溯源知流。兹羽兹石,异代殊实,乃竟同其名者,岂无说乎?盖其同生南国,同其丽色,同为贞瑞之符、美饰之用、宝藏之物者,既出一辙,则其取名之同,亦岂偶然哉?凡物宝瑞,必有品题。鸟之翡翠,江郎既赋于前矣。玉之翡翠,至今尚待华章。某也不揣,今因碧宫璇馆之设,亦思勉缀俚词以赞之。虽云难媲其美,岂不聊胜于无?其辞曰:
