In 2004, I conducted a survey in a village on the seaside of Lishui, Lijiang, Yunnan Province. I saw a solitary primitive forest surrounded by sparsely populated secondary forests. I asked an elder in the village why there was such a good piece of wood in the middle. The elder pointed to this lush forest and told the following story: After the liberation of Lijiang in 1949, there were small-scale reactionary armed groups in the northern part of Diqing. PLA ordered the suppression of bandits. The Naxi people who live in the dam have always admired nature, trees, frogs and water are their traditional culture
