Eyes of the world will be turned towards Beijing in just two years. China’s Minister of Information Industry, Wang Xudong, once told the public that during the 2008 Olympic Games, 3G technology will be in full swing in Beijing. The two years before the Games are the right time to build the 3G network. Where there is no doubt that 3G will be launched in China, it is more meaningful to concentrate on the 3G business itself than the licenses to be issued. 3G technology’s application fields may well be far more than what we explore in this feature. All the business that is beyond the capability of the existing Internet andc able networkw ill probablyb e providedb y 3G. However, the future 3G technology may not produce a single application system or two. Instead, some application portfolios are likely to emerge. It is somewhat like a cocktail: thee ight application fields are justa s the ingredientso f a “3G cocktail”. Except for video, interestingly, almost all the current 3G applica- tion systems can be realized in the existing 2.5G network. Some of them even came to people’s eyes several years ago. Therefore, we ought to think over what on earth will 3G bring. As far as technology is concerned, the broadband wireless network that 3G delivers will provide the necessary technology for business integration. Though China’s mobile carriers have long been promoting the orientation business, the users are still not able to accept it fully. Withthe 3G network, orientation can be combined with navi- gation and video inspection. If you are going to a strange place, your 3G handset is able to detect the position of the placea ndd esign some routes with the navigation. You can then choose the most conve- nient route with the help of video inspection. Such a business portfolio is the biggest advantage of 3G technology. But 3G is not merely a technology. It also deals with business mode and integration of value chain. As it is far more complex than 2.5G, 3G calls for a greaterc apacity of integrationa nd management. Telecom carri- ers should have a long term plan for businessp latform and putm ore efforts on the control of value chain to cater to the market trend. Thus, an ecosys- tem dominated by the carriers will be formed quickly in the 3G era. According to researchers, around 10% of the 3G application will bring 90% of the revenue to the market of value-added services.
