蜗牛以成、幼贝及卵在杂草地、菜土、堆肥内及枯枝落叶下等处越冬。近年来,苏州菜区危害日趋严重,受害植株,轻者叶肉被舔食,叶片残缺,影响作物正常发育。重者能把叶子吃光,嫩茎咬断。一般田块每亩蜗牛达5～6千头,严重田块在万头以上。蜗牛危害一年有两个高峰,2月下旬开始危害大棚蔬菜,3月下旬至4月上旬开始危害大田蔬菜,5～6月是危害的第一个高峰。8月下旬开始大田第二次危害,9～10个月是危害的第二个高峰。以往菜区防治蜗牛主要采取人工捕捉等措施,但效果很不理想。
