从文字发展论的角度出发 ,通过概述中美洲地区文字系统以及与此相关的数字和度量衡系统的产生和演变状况 ,把这一地区印地安土著居民的文化划分为远古、文化成型、古典、后古典和殖民时期五个主要发展阶段 ,并对活跃在文化成型、古典和后古典三个时期中的几支影响较大的族群如奥美克人、爱比奥美克人、萨婆特克人、玛雅人和阿兹特克人的文字发明和使用情况做了简要的介绍。
