意境这个范畴即是审美要求又是创作法则。古往今来,凡是好的绘画都有美的意境。中国山水画的意境是中国绘画发展到一定阶段所提出的审美要求和创作要求。宋代郭熙认为自然界有美的景物,弹药经过作者再创造才能成为美的意境。他在《林泉高致》中说道:“世之笃论,谓山水有可行者,有可望者,有可游者,有可居者。凡画至此,皆入妙品。但可行可望,不如可游可居之为得。何者?观今山川,占地数百里,可游可居之处,十无三四。而必取可游可居之品,君子之所以渴慕林泉者,正谓此佳地故也。故画者当以此意造,而鉴者又当以此意穷之。”画家努力创造可游可居的意境,欣赏者要留意画家所创造的美的意境。由此可见意境在山水画创作和鉴赏活动中的重要性。
