希腊神话中,盖亚是从混沌中诞生的第一位原始神,亦是大地与众神之母。她手中的生命之瓶里装着生命泉和万物之种,所以在西方,人们亦把盖亚尊为求子之神。在《神谱》中关于她的描述为“冲突与混乱来自于万神之母盖亚,在她的身上,我们既看到了创造,又看到了毁灭,既看到了秩序,又看到了混乱。”所以盖亚对于二元对立论的主体意识几乎可以说是异常的鲜明,她结合了秩序与混乱,既是创造亦是毁灭。
