费城管弦乐团创立于1900年,美国五大交响乐团之一,以其百年历史、精湛水准和饱满灿烂的“费城之声”而享誉世界乐坛;斯托科夫斯基担任音乐总监的29年奠定了其作为世界级乐团的雄厚基础,这位大师以他明星般的魅力和出众的指挥才华为乐团赢得广泛知名度;该团还积极介绍与首演现代音乐,为美国乐坛带了来欣欣向荣的景象;1973年,指挥大师奥曼迪率团访问正处于“文革”时期的中国;1993年5月,费城管弦乐团第二次来到中国,在上海体育馆举行了音乐会,适逢国家正强调加强高雅艺术之际,国家主席江泽民和克林顿总统专程为此分别给予题词。
