何申小说在题材选择、形象刻划、叙述方式等方面都有独特之处。就题材选择看，他的小说多取材于我国比较偏远、落后、荒蛮的农村地区，而且主要取自这些地区的县、乡镇、村的各级各类干部和农村“能人”的生活空间；就形象刻划看，他追求的是“真的人物”，他写了乡镇干部们优秀的一面，也写出了他们的缺陷和不足；就叙述方式看，他总是以生活化、平实化的语言，以“丝线串珠”的结构方式来进行叙述。这些都是何申小说具有艺术魅力的原因。
