Vidavalur R et al conducted an experiment to investigate the effect of 5-phosphodiesterase inhibitor sildenafil on the angiogenic response of human coronary endothelial cells. Cells exposed to (1-20) muM sildenafil showed significant tubular morphogenesis and induced the production of thioredoxin-1, heme oxygenase-1 and VEGF. Sildenafil induces the production of VEGF and angiopoietin-specific receptors such as KDR, Tie-1 and Tie-2. This vasogenic response can be inhibited by tinprotoporphyrin IX (SnPP). Sildenafil at concentrations below 1 μM did not have any vasogenic response
