但丁创作《神曲》主要采用象征手法,原因主要在于:一,中世纪文学受基督教影响,象征成为作家创作构思、传达的重要途径,受时代浸染,但丁根深蒂固地将这一手法继承下来;二,象征能够强化和升华作品的主题,能凭借暗示性和神秘性间接烘托作品的深层意蕴,为使读者关注作品的道德主旨,象征手法在《神曲》中得到了全面的自觉的运用。
