Despite the best efforts, the remaining wavelets are usually not zero-phase in the processed seismic sections. In this paper, we use a conventional model for the seismograms being processed. Assuming that the residual phase shifts can be approximated by a constant independent of frequency, the maximum variance norm is used to derive an algorithm that directly estimates the residual phase. When this algorithm is applied to the reflection coefficient obtained from the well log, it is only necessary to make assumptions that the reflection coefficient which may be applicable in most cases is non-Gaussian. When this algorithm is used to overlay the data, the interpretation ability of the seismic profile can be improved and the match between the relative acoustic impedance recovery curve and the measured speed logging curve can be improved.
