著名中国小麦之父金善宝曾说:“我国搞小麦远缘杂交有成就的只剩3人,一个是中国农科院的鲍文奎,一个是中国科学院西北植物所的李振声,再一个就是山西的孙善澄。”在孙善澄眼里,一粒种子包含着无数生命的信息和秘密,为了让麦子更强壮,打出更多的粮食,他独辟蹊径,用中间偃麦草和小麦杂交,将草的优良性能导入小麦中;为了让更多的麦田不再因被称为小麦癌症的黄矮病侵害而大面积减产,他先后育成优良的小偃麦新品种20余个、至今仍被国内外广泛引用研究的级别优异的种质资源5个,是我国小麦与中间偃麦草远缘杂交领域的奠基者和开拓者之一,先后荣获国家科技进步奖、国家发明奖,并成为山西省首位何梁何利科学与技术进步奖获得者,这一奖项一直被业界称为“中国的诺贝尔奖”。
