From the day of its birth, Taoism confronts the conflict between “immortality” and “vulgarity.” This conflict comes not only from the external pressure of Confucianism and Buddhism but also directly related to the Taoist concept of cultivating immortality. As a result of this conflict, the three religions are gradually merging with each other and eventually affect the immortality and cultivation of Taoism. The various stories about Lv Dongbin in the novels of the Ming Dynasty essentially reflect the transformation of this Taoist outlook on immortality.
