上世纪初,理雅各、庞德、威利将中国古诗首译成英文介绍给西方读者,迄今汉诗英译已是较为成熟的译介研究话题。上世纪初和歌英译亦掀起股股热潮,阿瑟·威利不仅在1918年翻译出版了《中国古诗170首》,在1919年翻译出版了《日本诗歌:和歌》,将5-7-5-7-7-音节的短歌译成五行诗,继承了Robert Brower和Earl Miner的翻译方式;而且在1921年至1923的《源氏物语》和《紫氏部日记》的翻译中,将诸多和歌归译成一行散文。汉诗与和歌的英译值得深入研究,特别是以阿瑟·威利这位有西方文化背景,又精通中文与日文的译者的译作为研究对象。
At the beginning of last century, James Legge, Pound, Willie introduced Chinese ancient poems into English to introduce to western readers. Up to now, English translation of Chinese poems has been a mature topic in translation studies. Arthur Willie not only translated and published “170 Ancient Chinese Poems” in 1918, but also translated and published “Japanese Poetry: Hymn” in 1919 and translated 5-7-5 -7-7-syllable short songs into five-line poems, inheriting the translation methods of Robert Brower and Earl Miner; and in 1921-1923’s “The Tale of Genji” and “Purple’s Diary” in the translation, many songs Translated into a line of prose. The English translations of Chinese poems and Chinese poems deserve further study, especially the study of Arthur Willie, a translator who is proficient in both Chinese and Japanese, with a Western cultural background.
